The people who walk in darkness will see a great light. For those who live in a land of deep darkness, a light will shine – Isaiah 9:2 (NLT)
Today is December 25, a day known to millions around the world as Christmas day. Those who celebrate Christmas often consider the Christmas season their favorite time of year. Whether it be food, family or various festivities, most people will find a reason to celebrate and enjoy the Christmas season. However, as much as we might enjoy all of these things, they remain a fickle reason to celebrate the season. Though there is nothing wrong with any of the things mentioned above, they are all temporary. The happiness they bring is momentary. At the end of the day, none of those things will last. Yet, even so, rejoice; for a thrill of hope remains!
In Isaiah 60:2 it was prophesied that darkness would cover the earth and that great darkness will surround all people here on earth. This is the darkness that is talked about in Isaiah 9:2. If we take a look at our world today, we can see that our already sin-darkened world is darkening at a more rapid rate every day. Though the darkness leads to misery, grief, and an eternity devoid of any light, John 3:19 says people love the darkness rather than the light. Yet, even so, rejoice; for a thrill of hope remains!
Despite the surrounding darkness, Isaiah 9:2 goes on to say that we have seen a great light. Despite the immensity of our darkness, this Light shines upon even the darkest heart. In fact, this Light is so powerful it dispels the darkness for all those living in the shadow of death. Later in Scripture, we will learn that this Light being talked about is none other than Jesus Christ. As He Himself says in John 8:12-13, “I am the Light of the World. Whoever follows Me will not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.” As the darkness deepens around us, the Light of Christ will only shine brighter. His light is shining, do you see it?
So this Christmas, let us celebrate the Light of the World, Jesus Christ, who came incarnate to set us free from the darkness of sin and death!
