“Then we will no longer be immature like children. We won’t be tossed and blown away by every wind of new teaching. We will not be influenced when people try to trick us with lies so clever they sound like the truth.” Ephesians 4:4 (NLT) In some ways, we should not be surprised by the behavior and lack of manners shown by some Christians in the church today. Today, we find in church liars, backbiters, gossips, and other detestable behaviors that wouldn’t make God happy. Too many of us forget that the church isn’t the building, but the people who worship in there are. We often think that the building is what God cherishes the most, and miss the point of what it is for.
Many self-proclaimed followers of Christ do not fully understand what they’re to be doing as Christians, and so they get tangled up focusing on everything but God. They become distracted and diverted away from what they’ve been called to do. The devil is a cunning and crafty being that shouldn’t be joked with. When it comes to his attack against believers, the devil doesn’t need any over-the-top sin to impede our walk with God. All he needs is to distract us in the form of gossiping, malice keeping, or any other little sin.
The only difference between some worldly Christians and unbelievers is we have our usual Sunday morning gathering that unbelievers lack. Take that away, and you probably won’t be able to differentiate a worldly Christian from an unbeliever. As a result of the attitude of some of these sets of Christians, the church is being ridiculed. When outsiders come into our churches and find some of these attributes, how are we to convert them when all they see in the church are behaviors and attitudes not attributed to God? When we have believers that are “tossed and blown about by every wind of new teaching,” how are we supposed to defend our faith? I’m certain that this is not what God wants for His children.
The cure for this widespread epidemic in the church today is for one to understand what the church stands for and what we are called to do in this perilous time like this. When we begin to grasp the true meaning of what it means to be a church, some of these devilish behaviors we see in the church today will vanquish. One thing devil is not known for is laziness. Because he knows he can’t take away our salvation, he will always try to derail our walk with God with worldly distractions. Also, he won’t stop until he has succeeded in rendering the church powerless, but we can fight against him by being on guard, constantly. Heed to the words of 1 Peter 5:8- “Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.” (NLT)
