Got to finally attend my first YASM convention (Young Adult and Single’s Ministry) after so many years of wanting to go. With this being my first convention, I didn’t know what to expect. My friend, who is a veteran at coming to this event, never told me what clothing styles to go with, so I just decided to pick this blazer. I hadn’t worn it in a long time, so I decided to just go with it.
Now, this is the part of the main event where things seemed crazy at first, but turned out AMAZING! I got to the gala night venue and saw so many people wearing beautiful outfits that made me want to punch my friend in the face (hahaha). I felt like going back to my hotel room as I thought I was looking out of place, but to my greatest surprise, a lady approached me and asked if I wanted to model with my outfit. To say I was shocked would be an understatement. I said to myself, “in what part of the world has this lady seen a 5’4in model”, but with the encouragement of some folks, I was able to agree to the lady’s request. Though nerve-wracking, I was able to do it. At the end of the gala night, “the unexpected” happened. I was so surprised when my name was called out to come and receive an award for the best-dressed male of the night.
The moral of the story is this; do not let your fear, nervousness or anxiousness hinder you from pursuing whatever you’re passionate about, like in my case, motivating people to be more attentive to their dressing. The fear and the other things, if I had let them, could have limited me and I would never have won that award.
